May 2018

This month, as well as our regular Thursday gigs at Maghull, Didsbury, Eastham and Grappenhall, we played for Bedale Jazz Club at Romanby Golf ClubNorthallerton. It was a long journey there and back but the weather and the surroundings were beautiful and it was a very worthwhile trip.

John Hallam again featured three times for us on reeds – at Romanby on the 4th, Grappenhall on the 24th and Eastham on the 25th and ; while John Padfield again played at Maghull (on the 10th) and Didsbury (on the 17th).

Sixty-one different numbers featured in our setlists this month, mostly, as is usual, from the much-loved traditional repertoire. Most favoured vocals were Just A Gigolo and Chinatown; while among the instrumentals, Ain’t She Sweet, Bourbon Street Parade, Christopher Columbus, Honeysuckle Rose and I’ve Found A New Baby featured regularly. Mention must also be made of Washington And Lee Swing, not one we play very often but it featured at three gigs this month. A few “revived” tunes also featured: Chimes Blues and Milenberg Joys deserving of particular mention; and we continued the “old” practice of opening several gigs with the Teddy Bears’ Picnic. John Hallam’s much-applauded feature this month was Puttin’ On The Ritz; and at Didsbury, John Padfield gave a well-received soprano sax rendition of Summertime, played with a latin rhythm. Special mention this month goes to the gig at Grappenhall, where a very lively and enthusiastic audience gave us a great night and scooped this month’s award for best singing of Swing Low.
